What Missed Calls Cost a Home Service Business
Every home service owner knows missed calls cost money. Fewer know how much. A rough estimate with your own numbers is enough to decide whether better coverage pays for itself, and which hours to fix first.

Count the calls you are missing
Start with your phone records for a normal month and a busy one. Count calls that went to voicemail or were not answered, and split them by time: during business hours, evenings, nights and weekends. Remove repeat calls from the same number on the same day so you count people, not rings.
Estimate how many would have become jobs
Not every missed call is a lost job. Some are vendors, some call back, and some were never going to book. Look at the calls you did answer: what share became a booked job? Apply a cautious version of that rate to the missed calls.
Run the numbers
Here is a sample calculation with made-up numbers. Replace each one with your own.
- Missed calls from new customers in a month: 60.
- Share that would have booked if answered: 30%, so 18 jobs.
- Average first job value: $350, so $6,300 in first jobs.
- Add repeat work and referrals from a share of those customers, and the yearly figure is usually several times larger.
Fix the most expensive hours first
Missed calls cluster. For many service businesses, the most expensive ones come during jobs in the middle of the day and in the evening when homeowners get home and notice the problem. Those are the hours to cover first, whether with a person, an answering service or an AI receptionist.
Measure after you change something
Track the same numbers for the next 90 days: calls answered, emergencies reached, estimates booked and jobs won. In nexTalker, every answered call is logged with an outcome on the customer's record, which makes the comparison straightforward.
