Answering Storage Unit Size Questions by Phone
"What size do I need?" is the question most storage shoppers call to ask. A confident, accurate answer is often the difference between a rental and a caller who keeps shopping. Write your size guidance down once, and every call gets the same good answer.

Start with typical size guidance
These are common rules of thumb. Check them against your own units, door sizes and ceiling heights before you use them.
- 5 by 5: boxes, seasonal items, a small closet's worth.
- 5 by 10: a walk-in closet; the contents of a studio without large furniture.
- 10 by 10: a one-bedroom apartment.
- 10 by 15: a two-bedroom apartment or small house.
- 10 by 20: a three-bedroom house, or a car.
- 10 by 30: a four-bedroom house or more.
Ask the questions that find the right fit
A few questions get to the right size faster than describing every unit.
- What are you storing: a room, a whole home, business inventory or a vehicle?
- Any large items, like a sofa, a mattress or appliances?
- Do you need climate control for furniture, documents or electronics?
- Do you want to drive up to the door?
- When do you move in, and for how long?
Offer one size up when in doubt
Renters who run out of space are unhappy and often move out. When a caller is between sizes, suggest the larger one and say why. Approved wording helps your receptionist do this consistently without sounding like an upsell.
Finish the rental on the call
Once the size is settled, check availability at the facility the caller wants and share the link to rent. If that size is not available, offer the closest alternative or another facility, and save the request for follow-up.
